Equiano died in March 1797, a full ten years before the slave trade was abolished in British ships, forty years before slavery was abolished in British colonies, and 68 years before slavery was ended in the United States.
Entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African (1789), the book rapidly went through nine editions in his lifetime. It is one of the earliest-known examples of published writing by an African Writer to be widely read in England.

Sadly, his eldest daughter Anna Maria Vassa, died just a few months after Equiano on 21st July 1797 aged just four years and is buried at St. Andrew's Church, Chesterton, Cambridge where there is a commemorative plaque in her memory.
Olaudah Equiano in his later life married Susan Cullen. She was born in Fordham, Cambridgeshire in either 1761 or 1762. In 1792 she married Equiano.
